Accessibility is part of a good restaurant experience, not a separate polish task. Guests should be able to browse categories, open dishes, read details, and return to the menu using touch, keyboard, or assistive technology. A menu that works for more people is also usually easier for everyone to use in a busy, dim, or noisy restaurant.
Start with readable content. Use sufficient contrast between text and background, avoid overly small type, and keep line lengths comfortable. Important information such as price, availability, and allergen notes should not be hidden in low-contrast microcopy. Make headings descriptive so a screen-reader user can understand the structure without seeing the layout.
Touch targets need room. Category buttons, dish cards, close controls, and viewer actions should be large enough to activate without precision. Leave space between adjacent controls so a guest does not accidentally select the wrong category. On desktop, visible keyboard focus states should make the current control obvious.
Do not communicate meaning through colour alone. Pair a status colour with words or an icon: “Available,” “Currently unavailable,” “3D ready,” or “Preview processing.” This is especially important for guests with colour-vision differences and for anyone viewing the menu in glare or low light.
Allergen and dietary content deserves careful wording. Collect structured information from the restaurant, show it near the dish, and identify missing information instead of silently treating it as safe. A digital menu can make updates easier, but it does not remove the restaurant’s responsibility to keep the information accurate or to help guests who need clarification.
Motion should support understanding rather than compete with it. Avoid autoplay viewer rotation, flashing effects, and essential information that only appears through animation. Respect reduced-motion preferences and make sure opening a 3D or AR enhancement never prevents a guest from returning to the normal dish details.
Test accessibility with real interaction methods. Navigate with only a keyboard, zoom the page, use a screen reader, rotate a phone, and try the menu with one hand. Ask someone unfamiliar with the product to find a dish and its allergen information. These tests reveal barriers that visual review alone cannot catch.
